Over the Christmas break, I managed to get some sun in the Dominican Republic, so I decided to take two books along for the trip: MARBLES – A Graphic Memoir by Ellen Forney; and SUICIDE, INDIVIDUAL and SOCIETY by Toyomasa Fuse, (which I will review later).
I had many a funny stare whenever I brought out the book on SUICIDE INDIVIDUAL and SOCIETY, however, as I read MARBLES I attracted even more attention as I couldn’t stop laughing, talking to myself and at the book: ‘OMG, SO TRUE!!!’ ‘YES!’ ‘Club Van Gogh, yep, I’d fit in just perfectly’ ‘I hear you Ellen’…and so on….
I couldn’t wait to Google the author ‘Ellen Forey’ when I returned to Toronto and plugged back into the on-line world, so I did just that, got in contact with her and asked if it was okay to use her book image for my blog.
First impressions: Marbles is cheerful, bright, colorful, humorous and inviting. This is a memoir of Ellen Forney’s journey through her bipolar diagnosis: medication trials, her ups, downs and quest to find balance and answers to creative dilemmas and life. What makes this book unique is Ellen’s way of expressing herself – full of imagery, her comic /graphic style with written word; often humorous, and stories to relate. Later on in the book, useful factual information and research from solid sources add greater insight. All of this from an ‘artist’s’ perspective; rare, and very helpful for others, especially those who may be touched by bipolar disorder.
As I open the book right now, I smile, it gives me the feeling I am not alone;
As I open the book right now, I smile, it gives me the feeling I am not alone; the questions the artist conjures up in me, also quite okay and again ‘there is someone else who speaks and relates to the same language!’.
For those who don’t like ‘reading’, no worries, you’ll be on the last page before you know it, thanks to Ellen’s illustrations, and those who like reading will definitely enjoy the unique style and contents of the book.
Ellen thank you so much for sharing your experiences through your creativity, now available to the world through your book. You inspire me!.
